Community Campaigns

Campaign Victories

Over the 2006 legislative cycle, hundreds of household workers traveled to Sacramento eight different times to educate legislators about the abuses in the industry and the value of their work.  Through press conferences and community forums, household workers informed their peers, the community, and employers about the campaign.  Further, the campaign developed the individual and collective leadership of immigrant women through campaign coordinating committees and democratic decision making structures. Because of the hard work and dedication of hundreds of household workers, AB2536 passed through the California Assembly and Senate; however, on September 30, 2006 Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed AB2536.  Household workers were outraged by the Governor's decision but are undeterred in their struggle to win dignity and respect.  In 2007, household workers across the state will continue to educate and mobilize their peers, build alliances, educate legislators, the community, and employers, and build momentum for the next stage of the campaign.
