1989-1990
In 1990, MUA was founded by two immigrant women, Clara Luz Navarro y Maria Olea, as a result of a study sponsored by the University of California. As interviewers of this project, Clara Luz y María met with hundreds of immigrant women in the Bay Area and realized the isolation that immigrant women face. MUA began with 8 women and the support of the Northern California Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NCCIR).
