History

1994-1995

On July 1, 1994, Proposition 187 was included in the California election ballot. The law, supposedly directed against undocumented immigrants, threatened to expel immigrant children from public schools, deny medical attention to immigrant families, and fomented a hostile and discriminatory climate against immigrants. MUA alleged that Proposition187 was a racist attack against all immigrants and joined the statewide campaign Californians United Against Proposition 187. The campaign launched intensive activities door-to-door, in the streets, and via the media to convince voters to vote against the law. Although San Francisco voters overwhelmingly rejected the Proposition, voters in the rest of the state approved the law.

Working with SF General Hospital doctors, MUA helped to create a model policy for assisting immigrant survivors of domestic violence.

MUA worked with other Mission neighborhood groups to transform a dirty, abandoned, and dangerous piece of land into Alioto Park. Here MUA started the Pachamama Community Garden Project.

MUA grew to a membership of two hundred and a staff of tour.
